Self-Assessment Tax Return FAQs

Q:

How do I know if I need to file a self-assessment tax return?

A:

If HMRC believe you need to complete a tax return, they will write to you each year in April or May. You then have until the following January to file your self-assessment online with HMRC.

Q:

When do I need to file my tax return by?

A:

There are two main deadlines for filing your self-assessment tax return each year:
a) 31st October – Paper deadline
b) 31st January – Online deadline

Q:

Is it better to do my Tax Return as soon as the tax year finishes, or wait?

A:

We would recommend you complete your tax return as soon as possible at the start of each tax year, particularly if you believe you are due a rebate. By doing your self-assessment early, you remove the stress and worry associated with submitting your return close to the deadline.

Q:

How do you calculate the cost of my tax return?

A:

Each quote we provide for our self-assessment service depends on the complexity of the return. Our ‘standard’ returns, where there is only one form of income start at £95+VAT. If you have additional income, we may need to charge extra to account for the additional work required. This is established once we have received your financial information.

Q:

Will I be fined if I don’t submit a tax return?

A:

Yes, if you miss the 31st January in any year, you will immediately be fined £100. If you continue to miss subsequent deadlines for submitting a return, then you will receive additional penalties. Find out more here.

Q:

What is a UTR number?

A:

Your Unique Tax Reference Number (UTR) is HMRC’s way of identifying you. In order for us to file your return we will need your UTR number.

Q:

How do I get a UTR number if I don’t have one?

A:

If you do not have a UTR number and have been requested to file a tax return, you need to contact HMRC to get one. Once you have one, this will remain your UTR number for life.

Q:

What do I do if I’ve lost my UTR number?

A:

Contact HMRC as soon as possible and they will be able to provide you with your UTR.

Q:

What is the deadline for asking you to file my self-assessment?

A:

In order to complete the draft and file the return online, we would need your financial information no later than two weeks before the 31st January deadline. If you contact us after this date, we cannot guarantee filing your return prior to the deadline.

Q:

Will I be fined if I don’t submit a tax return?

A:

Yes, if you miss the 31st January in any year, you will immediately be fined £100. If you continue to miss subsequent deadlines for submitting a return, then you will receive additional penalties.

Q:

Do you include the Self-Assessment within your Limited Company Accounting Service for contractors?

A:

No. Our accounting service for contractors is related to their business accounts, whereas a self-assessment tax return is associated with their personal tax obligations. Whilst some clients use our tax return service, others prefer to do it themselves so not incur additional fees.

Q:

How do I get my money if I’m due a rebate?

A:

If it turns out that you’ve overpaid tax, then HMRC will provide you with a rebate. This will normally be sent to you within 8 weeks of submitting your self-assessment by either cheque or bank transfer.

Q:

What do I do if I owe HMRC money?

A:

If it turns out you owe money to HMRC, then the deadline for making payment is the same day as filing your deadline, i.e. 31st January. To ensure you aren’t penalised, we encourage anyone who is likely to owe tax revenue to HMRC to complete their annual tax return as early as possible.
