Can business mentors help freelancers?

Going freelance can be an overwhelming experience. There is so much to learn all at once that it can be a very stressful process to go through, even though it tends to be rewarding in the end. Getting help, support and advice from others who have already gone freelance is a great way to bridge any gaps in your experience and ensure nothing slips through the cracks.

Many experienced freelancers will be all too happy to share their own tips and advice on how they managed to go from employment to running their own business.

Can a business mentor help freelancers?

Often, someone who takes on freelance work will go on to form their own company operating in a similar area and a good case study for this is Holly Moore, managing director of Make Events.

Speaking to Event magazine, she explained how she previously worked for pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca as events manager in their employee engagement division before going on to form a wedding venue dressing business called Brides & Bows, which she later sold.

Ms Moore then made the decision to go freelance and enlisted the support of a business mentor to help her along the way, a choice she found extremely beneficial to her career progress.

She added: “I thought that now I didn’t have a boss I should have some guidance. He has really helped me understand why I didn’t push myself sooner which has made me realign my thinking and make bolder and braver decisions.”

The experiences of Ms Moore might offer those who are considering a freelance career a pathway they can follow to make their progress smoother. It can be a tricky path to go down, but freelancers benefit from being able to pick and choose their own hours, providing a level of flexibility and control that those who work for an employer typically do not have access to.

Among the areas freelancers may need support with is tax, as this is where a lot of people make mistakes as they do not fully grasp how the system works and what their responsibilities are.

Have you enlisted the help of a mentor to help with your freelance career – feel free to share your experience? If you haven’t, would you use one?
