NSCC: Lack of skilled workers across the UK

There are growing concerns about the lack of specialist skilled workers across the UK, according to a new survey produced by the National Specialist Contractors’ Council (NSCC).

The organisation’s latest State of Trade Survey showed that the number of businesses having problems in recruiting skilled staff is at its highest for 14 years.

Overall, 47 per cent of those involved in the poll said they struggled to find workers with the right skill set, with just two per cent of businesses believing the experience and skill of workers has improved over the past year.

Therefore, the NSCC is calling for more to be done to boost skills across a number of industries, including construction so that vital projects are still able to go ahead.

However, there has been a rise in the number of firms opting to contact specialist contractors over the last 12 months, with contractors seeing a 65 per cent increase in new enquiries and a 54 per cent rise in new orders.

Chief executive of the NSCC Suzannah Nichol warned: “The growing construction market is great news for specialist contractors, but we need to tackle head-on the skills crisis that is facing the industry.

“If we do not invest in recruiting and training people with the right skills, the industry will not be able to meet demand and this will impact on the wider UK economy.”
