With Christmas and New Year out of the way, that annual bug bear for millions of people across the UK now looms on the horizon. Whilst your credit and debit cards remain white hot from the pre & post Christmas spending frenzy, you're likely to be starting to think about your self-assessment tax return. Unless you're one of the 24,500 people who managed to get your tax return filed just prior to Big Ben bringing in the start of 2016, then you're quickly running out of time to get yours filed with HMRC before the deadline at the end of the month.

The dust has now settled on the rather surprising result from this year's General Election.  With the Conservatives sweeping to an overall majority, they now face limited opposition when it comes to passing their policies through Parliament. We already know that there will be a referendum before 2017 on whether to remain in the EU, but nothing was spoken in the hullabaloo in the run up to voting day about IR35, although we did hear from the Chancellor's Autumn Statement about plans to simplify the tax system. However, little else is known about what is planned by the Tories when it comes to the self-employed, contractors and freelancers, who now make up a 12 million strong voice? In 2014, the UK surpassed previous records as the number of people opting to be self-employed soared past 4.6m people - more than 15% of the entire workforce.
