New data from the Office for National Statistics showed the number of self-employed Britons fell by 51,000 in the three months to July 2015, when compared to the same period in 2014. Self-employed people and microbusiness owners are to benefit from planned changes to the controversial European VAT Mini One Stop Shop (VAT MOSS) regulations. The European Commission has confirmed that it will be proposing an exemption to the rule for small companies and sole traders selling across EU borders, following a considerable backlash among smaller firms to the introduction of the laws in January 1st 2015. Self-employed people are currently worried about whether they will have enough money to see them through their retirements, according to an industry survey. A national survey from the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE) has shown that 54.4 per cent of freelancers are concerned about their finances post-retirement, with 37.3 per cent saying they are unable to contribute towards a pension fund. There has been a pronounced increase in confidence levels among freelancers in the UK over the last few months, a new report has revealed. The latest Freelancer Confidence Index from the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE) has shown that 41 per cent of freelancers are optimistic about their business performance improving in the next 12 months, compared to 25 per cent who are not confident. The government has been urged to do more to support self-employed people and arrest a recent decline in the number of people in the UK choosing to work for themselves. Recent figures for July 2015 from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that the number of self-employed UK workers has fallen at its fastest rate for 17 years, dropping by 131,000 in the last 12 months. The government has announced plans to launch a new review that will look for ways in which self-employed people across the UK could be provided with more robust support. Led by the successful entrepreneur Julie Deane, founder of The Cambridge Satchel Company, the review will highlight the contribution freelancers make to the UK economy, while considering how they can be better supported.
